ზაფხულის სკოლა 2018
From July 16th to August 4th, 2018 the George Eliava Institute of Bacteriophages, Microbiology and Virology is organizing a Summer School in bacteriophage research methodology for master students, PhD students and young scientists. The school includes a week course for genome annotation (provided by Prof. A. Kropinski) and 2 weeks in basic methodology of bacteriophage isolation, selection and characterization. The course involves 3 theoretical lectures and 12 days practical classes provided by the scientists of the Eliava Institute.
The Training course will include 3 modules:
I module: Genome Annotation (July 16- July 21, 2018)
Format: This module will be a series of lectures/demonstrations interspersed with practical work, where the participants can work on their own genomic data or that provided by the instructor. While it will emphasize bacteriophage genomics, where appropriate data on bacterial genome assembly and annotation will also be provided.
II module: Bacteriophage isolation, purification, enumeration, determination of phage host range (July 23-July 28, 2018 )
Format: The participants will be offered to collect the environmental samples for phage isolation. Several bacterial strains will be used for inoculation process. The module will offer training in sample processing, phage isolation, propagation, cloning and enumeration. The host range of selected phages will be determined on set of different strains.
III module: Efficiency of plating (EOP), Phage induction, Characterization of phage particles by virion morphology, DNA restriction profiles, phage serology (July 30-August 4, 2018),
Format: Course will provide methodology for obtaining phage from bacterial cells by spontaneous production and phage induction by Mytomicin C. Virion morphology of selected bacteriophages will be examined by the transmission electron microscopy. The participants will be trained in isolation of phage DNAs and DNA restriction methodology.
3 presentations will be provided during the course:
- “Bacteriophage research: main findings and different fields of application” (provided by Dr. Nina Chanishvili)
- “Phage Ecology” (provided by Dr. Marina Tediashvili)
- “Experience in Human Phage Therapy” (Provided by Dr. Mzia Kutateladze).
Working language: English (Please note, no simultaneous translation will be provided)
