Workshop "Possibilities of Practical Applications of Bacteriophages"
On June 5-6, a two-day workshop “Possibilities of Practical Application of Bacteriophages” was held at the G. Eliava Institute of Bacteriophages, Microbiology and Virology. The event was organized with the support of the Ministry of Education, Science, and Youth of Georgia within the framework of the “Young Scientists for the Best Use of the Planet” Week. The goal of the workshop was to study bacteriophages and the principles of their application, as well as the history of bacteriophage development in Georgia, and to familiarize the young medical and scientific community with current scientific work being conducted.
The workshop was attended by 20 bachelor's and master’s students from various private and state universities of Georgia (Tbilisi State Medical University, Ivane Javakhishvili State University, Ilia State University, David Tvildiani Medical University, Caucasus International University, and Geomedi Medical University). As part of the research, students attended public lectures on the history of bacteriophage discoveries and the treatment of infectious diseases using the phage preparations. Young scientists had the opportunity to learn about the significant role of the Eliava Institute in the development of the field of bacteriophage studies. The workshop also included laboratory hands-on training on the isolation of phages from the environment. Students learned about the principles of using a transmission electron microscope. At the end of the workshop, participants presented group work on future perspectives of using phages.
